Play Synopsis

Seven kids and a dog gather at a school bus stop and start a journey of self-discovery and mutual support that expresses all the humor and humanity of Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip.  The gang opens with Charlie Brown’s many failings, then immediately sing his praises as a “good man” full of “nobility, humility and a sense of honor.”  Through 17 songs and numerous sketches, some short as a four-panel comic strip, the teasing and taunting of childhood is enriched by unexpected bursts of affection.  The same kids who rib Linus for carrying a blanket dance with him holding their own childhood blankets.  No one understands Schroeder’s admiration for Beethoven, but together the group plans a celebration for the composer’s birthday.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and Lucy are the central figures, but the plot grows with Charlie’s little sister Sally’s experiments with her forceful personality, and with Peppermint Patty and Marcie, who explore the boundaries of best-friendship.   Snoopy, the dog with a fantasy life, has his own conflicts:  should he remain happy as a pet, certain about suppertime, or seek freedom for his wild nature.  The sketches show us that Charlie Brown will continue to fail at activities like kite-flying and baseball, but never let his inner strengths be tarnished.  In the end, the entire group shares the song “Happiness,” and Lucy, shaken by discovering she is less than perfect, reaches out to Charlie Brown for once without teasing.
